Causes of Cold Sores

What really causes cold sores? You might have asked yourself at one time or the other. This infection can be a bit embarrassing as it affects the facial area. You can not lock yourself in the house until it clears as it takes upto 14 days to clear.

The beauty however, is that it heals leaving no scars on your face.

Cold sore is caused by a virus known as Herpes Simplex Virus type I (HSVI).

The virus enters the body through a broken mucous membrane. A loose denture or the edge of a broken tooth could could tear the mucous membrane. The virus enters the body and lies in a dormant state.

You could also get a cold sore by receiving a loving kiss from someone who has already been infected. It would only be wise not to allow an infected person to even give you a peck.

Sharing of utensils and lip balm with an infected person could also make the chances of getting the infection very high. Avoid sharing face towels with anyone. Some people may have the virus but because it is lying in a dormant state, you may not know that the person has it.

Touching the infected area of someone else and then touching yourself could almost guarantee you the infection.

If you have suffered from the infection before, it is advisable to avoid circumstances that trigger a recurrence. Some of such circumstances are;
- Excessive stress
- Exposure to a lot of sunlight
- Acidic food such as pineapple, oranges, lemons etc.
- Chocolates, nuts, almonds

Some toothpastes and mouth washes contain sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) which triggers the herpes virus.
