When you get that tingle letting you know that the cold sore on the lip has returned, it isn't a happy feeling. This means days of a sore which turns into a blister and eventually scabs to heal. It also means you need to stay careful about not sharing items with others that touch your mouth or spreading the virus to another person. What are some ways to try to prevent this from happening again and minimize it if it emerges?

1) Artificial Sweetners: Some people say that artificial sweetners such as aspartame can trigger the herpes simplex virus and re-activate a cold sore. This seems worth testing to check if you are prone to cold sore outbreaks and use artificial sweeteers in ice tea or sodas.

2) Ice Cubes: When you notice a cold sore, wrap an ice cube or ice chips into a wash cloth or paper towel and apply to the lip area. Don't let it directly touch your lip as you don't want any burn marks from freezing. Several people have noticed this makes the cold sore much smaller by the next day and it will heal quickly.

3) Neem Seed Oil: You can take neem seed oil and apply it directly on your lip. This is found in health food stores and it is a remedy used for skin rashes including scabies in India. Neem is also used internally for digestive problems and in many Indian households is a staple like tylenol in the United States. Neem is also helpful for yeast infections and fungus. It has a pungent odor but can be very effective as a healing agent.

4) Lecithin is a supplement that can be taken orally . It is advised to take 1500 2500 mgs daily for a few weeks to nourish the body.

Remember also to take lysine to balance your amino acids and watch out for argine in many protein supplements for body building.
